Ed Sheeran Slays First Citi Concert Series of the Year on TODAY
He rocked us, charmed us, he made us smile

If you've streamed music at all this year, or even just ventured in public during the first few months of 2017, you've probably found yourself listening – and likely singing and dancing along – to the chart-topping smash hit "Shape of You." So who better to kick off this year's Citi Concert Series on TODAY than singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran?

Rockefeller Center clearly was the place to be.

VIP treatment
Eager fans braved the rain and lined up in and around Rockefeller Plaza bright and early to claim a spot at the show – some even arrived as early as 3 a.m. to catch a glimpse of the star. With Sheeran's concert taking place only a few days after the release of his highly anticipated new album "Divide," this clearly was the place to be.

After a quick breakfast, a goodie bag, and a few selfies, select Citi cardmembers flashed their VIP badges before being ushered to a private area near the front of the stage. With a perfect view of the stage, Fan Cam, and TODAY cameras, the anticipation grew.

Let's get it on
Ed Sheeran showed up and showed off his versatility by offering up a very different rendition of his hit tune "Shape of You." The lovable redhead then segued into another hit track from the new album, "Castle on the Hill," before performing two more songs from "Divide."

Between sets, TODAY hosts asked Sheeran about his album and upcoming plans, prompting his announcement that he plans to spend the next year touring to support the album. "Next year is going to be stadiums, this year is going to be arenas," he said. Needless to say, fans went wild over the news.

After the interview, Sheeran was excited to get back to performing live for the enthusiastic crowd. He surprised us with a throwback performance of the critically acclaimed ballad "Thinking Out Loud," which won Grammys in 2016 for both Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.

Front row autograph
That wasn't all. Sheeran stuck around to play a bonus song for the crowd, even though it wouldn't be broadcasted on television. However, TODAY cameras snuck in for a few moments just to show how dedicated the singer was. "I'm doing one more, because I feel bad you all woke up so early," admitted Sheeran before belting out his new ballad, "Perfect." It was.

Just when you thought it was over, Sheeran showed some real fan love off the stage. He made a detour for the crowd, signed autographs, and took selfies with many of his supporters. No doubt it was a great start to the 2017 Citi Concert Series on TODAY.
