It was a rainy morning in New York City and Miley Cyrus was set to take the stage for the Citi Concert Series on TODAY. But moments before the cameras went live, the pop star did a quick run-through to test out her under-the-weather vocals.
It's exactly what many have been yearning to hear lately.
After a couple of coughs (and a few audience laughs), the singer-songwriter delivered a new hit, a classic, and a banger. And that's when things went from good to great.
Dressed in white cutoff jean shorts and a white t-shirt (someone got the "it's OK to wear white before Memorial Day" memo), Miley kicked off the live broadcast with her new single "Malibu." She then covered a song from her country music legend godmother before wowing the crowd with fan favorite "We Can't Stop."
Although there wasn't any twerking to be found during her performance, the songstress still managed to surprise the crowd by treating them to a brand new song titled "Inspired."
While not broadcast to viewers, the country tune delivered an uplifting message about the power to make a difference in the world. Totally relatable and – dare we say inspiring – the laid-back music seemed to further cement Miley's musical transition from her last couple of albums. It wasn't the outrageous stage show that we've grown accustomed to seeing from the performer, but it's exactly what many have been yearning to hear lately.
Before exiting, Miley acknowledged her dedicated fans who stretched through Rockefeller Plaza, wet from lining up in the rain to see the star.
"This show is always very special because of the way that these fans line up super early in the morning. It always makes it extra special; because I know they worked hard to be here."
Just when you think it's not possible to be obsessed with Miley Cyrus – it happens! The down to earth, personable singer turns it on like the professional she is, and stuns the audience with impressive vocals, charisma, and a good ole' cowboy hat. In sickness and in health (and even in the rain), the "Malibu" singer shines.
