The Los Angeles Times is proud to announce the return of LA FOOD BOWL - 31 days of events celebrating Los Angeles' amazing food and drink scene. Spanning the entire month of May, LA FOOD BOWL will feature over 200 events. The chefs and restaurants that have put Los Angeles on the map as one of the world’s great food cities will appear alongside internationally renowned chefs in rare local appearances. The festival will continue to raise awareness and funds to fight food waste, hunger, food insecurity, and promote sustainability and waste reduction through charity partners and participating events.

Special international guests include: José Andrés (Spain/US), Diana Kennedy (UK/Mexico), Ben Shewry (NZ/Australia), Yoshihiro Narisawa (Japan), Virgilio Martinez (Peru), and many more. At this year's Festival Launch Party, you'll feast at food stations staffed by Rossoblu (the Bologna-focused restaurant from chef Steve Samson), LocoL (Restaurant of the Year 2017), Shibumi (the downtown L.A. izakaya), Night + Market (Kris Yenbamroong's Thai restaurant), Scopa, Chengdu Taste (spicy, complex Sichuan cuisine), and DTLA Cheese (smartly curated stand in Grand Central Market).

In conjunction with LA Kitchen - José Andrés, the Spanish chef who oversees an expansive restaurant empire (including the Bazaar in Beverly Hills)- will join Jonathan Gold and special guests Zooey Deschanel, Ron Finley, Susan Feniger, Chef Tim Kilcoyne, and more for a conversation on The Power of FOOD. After Hurricane Maria, José worked with his nonprofit World Central Kitchen to help serve more than 3.3 million meals in Puerto Rico and distribute food donations to survivors of Hurricane Harvey in Texas. Earlier this year José Andrés was named Humanitarian of the Year by the James Beard Foundation. As part of post-disaster relief efforts, some of LA's finest sous chefs will also be featured on stage, with a challenge to prepare a dish that could be scalable for hundreds of people. The participating chefs will be given the opportunity to join the chef relief team of World Central Kitchen, which was founded by Andrés after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Guests will be served pozole and paella from the José Andrés team.

Diana Kennedy has been called the grande dame of Mexican cooking, thanks to her decades-long mission to introduce authentic Mexican food to the United States during her long, influential career. She has written several cookbooks and has received two James Beard Awards and the Order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest award given to foreigners for service to Mexico.

Gabriela Cámara first earned worldwide attention for her Mexico City restaurants MeroToro and Contramar, which continues to attract crowds and famous chefs and accolades from culinary stars such as Alice Waters and Diana Kennedy. Cámara switched gears in 2015 and opened a San Francisco restaurant that she christened Cala. Other guests at this event will include Carlos Salgado (Taco María), Gabriela Cámara (Contramar, Cala), and Bricia Lopez (Guelaguetza). Attendees can visit Grand Central Market to sample dishes from Mexican restaurants Ana Maria Mexican Food, La Tostadería, Tacos Tumbras a Tomas, and Villa Moreliana.

Suthiporn "Tui" Sungkamee was known for elevating Thai cuisine to new heights throughout Los Angeles. As co-owner of Jitlada restaurant with his sister, Sarintip "Jazz" Singsanong, the duo specialized in creating southern Thai dishes that attracted crowds and chefs from across the country. Unfortunately Sungkamee passed away last fall, but his influence can be seen in the cooking of a number of local chefs.

As a tribute to late chef Tui Sungkamee (Jitlada), the LINE Hotel will bring together Kris Yenbamroong (Night + Market restaurants), Andy Ricker (Pok Pok, Portland), Jet Tila ("101 Asian Dishes You Need to Cook Before You Die"), Nancy Silverton (Mozza), Sapp Coffee Shop, and Jazz Singsanong (Jitlada) for a night to celebrate his life. The event will feature tastings, food stations, and live entertainment.
